History of Church
In 1985 eighteen interested Presbyterians met in the Chapel of Young Harris College to discuss organizing a Presbyterian congregation in Towns and Union Counties.
As an expression of faith several families purchased property on the Young Harris Highway. Their faith was justified. On October 21, 1986, Presbytery authorized the creation of Mountain Presbyterian Church and approved the purchase of the land for the church. On November 2 a service of organization, election and installation was held. The Reverend Dr. Charles Benz was installed as the pastor. At this time there were seventeen charter members. The congregation moved into its new home in September of 1988.
The Reverend K. Travis Adams became the second pastor, beginning his ministry in March 1990. Since then our congregation has grown to over 155 members and friends who are active in the church. New programs have been started, and our outreach to the communities we serve and to the world has grown in accordance with our understanding of the ministry that is ours as disciples of Christ. We started the first Cub Scout troop in Union County in 11 years, invited A.A. and Al-Anon to use our facilities, and were active in the leadership of the community’s Children’s Christmas Wish Program. Members were instrumental in the founding of Support in Abusive Family Emergencies (S.A.F.E.) [The PCUSA’s Presbyterian Women’s Birthday Offering one year went to this S.A.F.E. program]. We also are very actively involved in the Union-Towns Counties’ ecumenical Thanksgiving Service, Holy Week Services, and the Ministerial Alliance Association. Our mission giving to our denomination and the community continues to grow significantly every year.
On September 15, 2002 we dedicated our newly expanded facilities. We effectively tripled the size of our facility, made it fully wheelchair accessible (including an elevator), and now have ample paved and lighted parking.
There is still much to be done, and it can only happen if we, the members and friends of Mountain Presbyterian Church, participate in the programs and work of our church.
